User/Compute Nodes#

The User nodes are bare-metal systems that host remote desktop or console sessions. The user nodes are the systems that the cluster users will log into and perform their work.

The Compute nodes are the same as user nodes but dedicated to the execution of schedule jobs items using Slurm. Users are not prevented from logging into the compute nodes directly but it is discouraged as any introduced load on the compute nodes may result in slurm job scheduling being impacted.

Operating Systems#

These guides are written for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 based operating systems and are compatible with AlmaLinux 8 and Rocky Linux 8.

Access Controls#

Standard cluster user accounts must be able to SSH into the User/Compute Nodes.

Hostnames#

These guides use the following example Hostname and IP Address for User and Compute nodes. FQDNs can be provided by utilizing a DNS server or installing a hosts file on the system itself.

Note

An example /etc/hosts file has been provided: hosts
